Leaping dolphins smile at the camera, surrounded by palms and the moon in a blue sky.
Officially known as Santa Barbara's Bicentennial Friendship Fountain, the dolphin fountain was created in 1982 by local artist Bud Bottoms.
Legend claims that the dolphin is cousin to Santa Barbara's early Chumash Indians and signifies good luck. The sculpture and fountain sit in the center of a turnaround area at the foot of Stearns Wharf, a local landmark and tourist attraction that offers shopping, restaurants, views, and sights of unloading fishing boats.
