Half Moon Caye : The Half Moon Caye is located at the southeast corner of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, the furthest of Belize’s three atolls from the mainland, and one of only four such atolls in the Western Hemisphere. The atoll is an asymmetric rimmed platform, entirely surrounded by a fringing reef rising virtually to the surface. Inside this fringing reef is a lagoon speckled with hundreds of coral patches.

Parrotfish (Scaridae) : Traditionally, the parrotfish have been considered a family level taxon, Scaridae. While phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis of parrotfishes is still ongoing, it is now accepted that they are a clade in the tribe Cheilini, and are now commonly referred to as scarine labrids (subfamily Scarinae, family Labridae). So technically, they should be listed inside the Wrasse (Labridae) gallery. Nonetheless, I've listed them in their own gallery for the sake of convenience, as most divers know a parrotfish from a wrasse and consider the two groups distinct.

Belle Isle Aquarium (Detroit -- now defunct) : The Belle Isle Aquarium, located on Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan, was the oldest continually-operating aquarium in North America until it closed in 2005. It opened on August 18, 1904 and closed April 3, 2005. I visited it the final weekend it was open, and the crowds were thick. The facility was built around a single large gallery, lined with antiquated aquariums -- many of which were marred by grafitti and gang tags etched into the glass -- with an arched-ceiling that was completely covered with green glass tile to evoke an underwater feeling. The facility was old, in decrepit repair, and plagued by declining use from the local Detroiters, leading to its eventual closure.

The family contains only one genus, Coryphaena, which contains two species, both of which have compressed heads and single dorsal fins that run the entire length of the fish's bodies. Cactaceae (Cactus family) : A cactus (plural: cacti, cactuses or cactus) is a member of the plant family Cactaceae. Their distinctive appearance is a result of adaptations to conserve water in dry and/or hot environments. In most species, the stem has evolved to become photosynthetic and succulent, while the leaves have evolved into spines. Many species are used for ornamental plants, and some are also grown for fodder, forage, fruits, cochineal, and other uses. Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The tallest is Pachycereus pringlei, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2 m, and the smallest is Blossfeldia liliputiana, only about 1 cm in diameter at maturity. Cactus flowers are large, and like the spines arise from distinctive features called areoles. The cactus family is native to the Americas, where their range extends from Patagonia to southern Canada, but they are densest and most diverse in the regions of northern Mexico and the southern tropics of Argentina and Bolivia. Rhipsalis baccifera is the one exception; it is native to both the Americas and the Old World, where it is found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. It is thought to have colonized the Old World within the last few thousand years, probably by being carried as seeds in the digestive tracts of migratory birds. Many other species have become naturalized outside the Americas after having been introduced by people, especially in Australia, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean region. Cacti inhabit diverse regions, from coastal plains to high mountain areas.

Ericaceae (the Heath, Heather, and Rhododendron family) : Ericaceae, the heath family or the heather family is a plant family, comprising mostly calcifuge (lime-hating) plants that thrive in acidic soils. Many well-known plants of the Ericaceae live in temperate climates, such as cranberry, blueberry, various heaths and heathers (Erica, Cassiope, Daboecia, Calluna vulgaris etc.), huckleberry, azalea and rhododendron. However, the family also contains many tropical species. In eastern North America, members of this family often grow in association with an oak canopy, in a type of ecology known as an oak-heath forest. The Ericaceae consists of herbs, dwarf shrubs, shrubs and trees with leaves that are usually alternate or whorled, simple and without stipules, and hermaphrodite flowers. The flowers show considerable variability. The petals are often fused (sympetalous) with shapes ranging from narrowly tubular to funnelform or widely bowl-shaped. The corollas are usually radially symmetrical (actinomorphic) but many flowers of the genus Rhododendron are somewhat bilaterally symmetrical (zygomorphic).

They are found worldwide, but mostly occur in the Northern Hemisphere and southern Africa, typically in dry and/or cold areas where water may be scarce. "Catalufa" is an alternate common name for some members of the Priacanthidae family. The etymology of the scientific name ("prioo-", to bite + "akantha", thorn) refers to the family's very rough, spined scales. The common name of "bigeye" refers to the member species' unusually large eyes, suited to their carnivorous and nocturnal lifestyles. Priacanthidae are typically colored bright red, but some have patterns in silver, dusky, brown or black. Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis family) : Amaryllidaceae are a family of herbaceous, perennial and bulbous flowering plants included in the monocot order Asparagales. The family takes its name from the genus Amaryllis. There have been widely differing views as to the limits of the family. The most recent reclassification takes a broad view of the Amaryllidaceae, which then has three subfamilies, the Agapanthoideae (the old Agapanthaceae family), the Allioideae (the old Alliaceae family) and the Amaryllidoideae (the old Amaryllidaceae family). With this definition, the family includes about 75 genera and 1600 species. Plants have rather fleshy and two-ranked leaves and flowers typically arranged in umbels at the apex of leafless flowering stems, or scapes. The Agapanthoideae have superior ovaries, as do the Allioideae, the onion subfamily. The Allioideae produce allyl sulfide compounds which give them their characteristic smell.

Lamiaceae (Mint and Sage family) : Lamiaceae or Labiatae, also known as the mint family, is a family of flowering plants. It had traditionally been considered closely related to Verbenaceae, but in the 1990s, phylogenetic studies showed that many genera classified in Verbenaceae belong instead in Lamiaceae. The currently accepted version of Verbenaceae may not be closer to Lamiaceae than some of the other families in the order Lamiales. It is not known which of the families in Lamiales is closest to Lamiaceae. The family has a cosmopolitan distribution. The enlarged Lamiaceae contains about 236 genera and 6,900 to 7,200 species. The largest genera are Salvia (900), Scutellaria (360), and Thymus (220). Clerodendrum was once a genus of over 400 species, but by 2010, it had been narrowed to about 150. The plants are frequently aromatic in all parts and include many widely used culinary herbs, such as basil, mint, rosemary, sage, savory, marjoram, oregano, thyme, lavender, and perilla. Some are shrubs, trees, such as teak, or rarely vines. Many members of the family are widely cultivated, owing not only to their aromatic qualities but also their ease of cultivation: these plants are among the easiest plants to propagate by stem cuttings. Besides those grown for their edible leaves, some are grown for decorative foliage, such as coleus. Others are grown for food purposes, but seeds are utilized instead of leaves, such as with chia.

The family includes about 640-650 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees in 20-24 genera. The family is widespread, on every continent from boreal to tropical regions. The family includes a number of popular garden plants, including evening primroses (Oenothera) and fuchsias (Fuchsia). Some, particularly the willowherbs (Epilobium) are common weeds in gardens, e.g. Fireweed. The family is characterised by flowers with usually four sepals and petals; in some genera (e.g. Fuchsia), the sepals are as brightly coloured as the petals, giving the impression of a flower with eight petals. The seeds are very small, in some genera (e.g. Epilobium) with a tuft of down and wind-dispersed, in others (e.g. Fuchsia), in a juicy berry and dispersed by birds. The leaves are commonly opposite or whorled, but are spirally arranged in some species; in most, they are simple and lanceolate in shape. The pollen grains in many genera are loosely held together by viscin threads, meaning that only bees that are morphologically specialized to gather this pollen can effectively pollinate the flowers (it cannot be held effectively in a typical bee scopa). Accordingly, nearly all of the bees that visit onagraceous flowers are floral specialists (oligoleges).

It consists of carnivorous plants: besides the sundews, the genus Drosera, it also contains the even more-famous Venus fly trap Dionaea muscipula. The sundews produce sticky substances on their leaves that traps prey, and the Venus fly trap has leaves that form traps that close when disturbed. The third extant genus contains the single species Aldrovanda vesiculosa, which might be characterised as an aquatic Venus flytrap that traps prey underwater. Despite some debate, taxonomists have tended to include at least two of the three genera, and, in general, all three, in this family since at least 1906. Molecular evidence supports the inclusion of all three, and also shows that the two genera that have traps that snap shut (Dionaea and Aldrovanda) are more closely related to each other than to Drosera, suggesting that snap traps evolved only once. The family Droseraceae is part of the order Caryophyllales in the clade core eudicots. The family comprises three extant genera, totaling nearly 200 species. In the past Drosophyllum lusitanicum has been included in this family, but it is more closely related to the carnivorous liana Triphyophyllum and the non-carnivorous liana Ancistrocladus, and is, thus, classified elsewhere (to be specific, its own monotypic family Drosophyllaceae). Recent molecular and biochemical evidence (see the AP-Website) suggests that the carnivorous taxa in the order Caryophyllales (the families Droseraceae, Drosophyllaceae, Nepenthaceae, and the species Triphyophyllum peltatum) all belong to the same clade, which does not consist only of carnivorous plants but also of some non-carnivorous plants such as those in the family Ancistrocladaceae. A number of traditionally accepted families (Dialypetalanthaceae, Henriqueziaceae, Naucleaceae, and Theligonaceae) are now incorporated within the Rubiaceae following recent molecular phylogenetic research. Currently, there are about 611 genera and more than 13,000 species in Rubiaceae. It is the fifth largest family of flowering plants by number of genera, and the fourth or fifth largest by number of species. Species are concentrated in warmer and tropical climates around the world. Although Rubiaceae are found in every major region of the world except for continental Antarctica (which has only two species of vascular plants), diversity is highest in the humid tropics. The pattern of diversity in the family is very similar to the global distribution of plant diversity. The greatest number of species occur in Colombia, Venezuela and New Guinea. When adjusted for area, Venezuela was the most diverse, followed by Colombia and Cuba. A large number of poorly studied species exist as understorey shrubs in Madagascar and are threatened with habitat destruction. The genera Myrmecodia and Hydnophytum are epiphytes that have mutualistic relationships with ants.

The APG II system also classes the former families Mesembryanthemaceae Fenzl (1836) , Sesuviaceae Horan. (1834) and Tetragoniaceae Link (1831) under the family Aizoaceae. Most species (96%, 1782 species in 132 genera) in this family are endemic to arid or semi-arid parts of southern Africa,[1] but a few are from Australia and the Central Pacific. Most of these species are succulents and belong to the subfamilies Mesembryanthemoideae and Ruschioideae and are loosely termed mesems or mesembs. Most fig-marigolds are herbaceous, rarely somewhat woody, with stems growing either erect or prostrate. Leaves are simple, opposite or alternate, and more or less succulent with entire (or rarely toothed) margins. Flowers are perfect in most species (but unisexual in some), actinomorphic, and appear singularly or in few-flowered cymes developing from the leaf axils. Sepals are typically 5 (3-8) and more or less connate (fused) below. True petals are absent. However, some species have numerous linear petals derived from staminoides. The fruit is a capsule with one to numerous seeds per cell. A few species (especially Carpobrotus edulis, commonly called Ice Plant) have been widely introduced and become invasive.

Cyatheaceae (Scaly Tree Ferns) : The Cyatheaceae is the scaly tree fern family and includes the world's tallest tree ferns, which reach heights up to 20 m. They are also very ancient plants, appearing in the fossil record in the late Jurassic, though the modern genera likely appeared in the Tertiary. Cyatheaceae is the largest family of tree ferns, including about 500 species. Cyatheaceae and Dicksoniaceae, together with Metaxyaceae and Cibotiaceae, are a monophyletic group and constitute the "core tree ferns." Cyatheaceae are leptosporangiate ferns, the most familiar group of monilophytes. The Cyatheaceae usually have a single, erect trunk-like rhizome (stem). Their fronds (leaves) are also very large, some of the largest in the plant kingdom. Some species have fronds reaching 3–4 m in length, and have a final crown width of some 6 m. The fronds are circinate before unfolding and usually pinnately or bipinnately compound, with leaflets that are deeply pinnately lobed. The large leaves are covered in scales and hairs and bear sori (spore clusters) on the underside. Like most ferns, members of the Cyatheaceae are homosporous. Cyatheaceae are found in both New and Old World tropical wet montane forests and cloud forests, with some species extending into south-temperate regions. Most Cyatheaceae are terrestrial, with one sometimes being epiphytic and others having a creeping habit, but these are exceptions to the family norm. Cyatheaceae can be distinguished from arborescent Dicksonia by the presence of scales, the position of the sori, and the morphology of sporangia and spores. Since the exact number of species is not known, classification of the Cyatheaceae has had a long and controversial history, and is still undergoing revision.
